Permanent flattening of the transverse arch of the foot, with excessive weight-bearing pressure beneath the metatarsal heads leading to the formation of callosities. In most cases the primary cause is inefficiency of the intrinsic muscles of the foot.

Affaissement de l'arche transversale antérieure du pied provoquant une hyperpression des têtes métatarsiennes moyennes. Il est le plus souvent lié à l'association d'un «pied fragile» (hyperlaxité ligamentaire et pied ancestral) et d'une chaussure mal adaptée. Il est responsable de l'apparition de durillons plantaires douloureux, d'un avant-pied rond, de luxations pathologiques des orteils moyens, rendant l'avant-pied plat irréductible, et d'un névrome plantaire par compression nerveuse.
